The same token, several chains, no way back
USDT is issued on a number of blockchains, and while the balance reads the same in every wallet, the tokens are not the same tokens. TRC-20 USDT on TRON, ERC-20 USDT on Ethereum and SPL USDT on Solana are distinct issuances with distinct addresses, and a transfer sent on one network to an address that only exists on another does not arrive. It is not a delay; on many chain pairings it is not recoverable at all. The payout screen names the network we are expecting — match it, and ignore any habit you have from a previous sale.
What the peg rests on
Tether Limited holds reserves against the USDT in circulation and publishes periodic attestation reports describing them, weighted heavily toward US Treasury bills and cash equivalents. Those are attestations by an accounting firm rather than a full audit, and the peg is a commercial commitment rather than a government guarantee. In practice USDT trades very close to a dollar, but it has moved off it during market stress, which is worth knowing if you are timing a large sale.
USDT is the deepest stablecoin market, which matters on size
Tether has been the largest stablecoin by circulating supply for most of its life, and on chains like TRON it is the dominant dollar. That depth is the practical argument for holding USDT rather than a smaller stablecoin: a large sale moves the price less, and there is a bid at most hours. If you are selling a block-size amount, our OTC desk quotes a firm price rather than working the order.
Selling USDT is still a disposal
A stablecoin trading at a dollar can feel like it is already cash, but converting USDT to US dollars is a disposal of property for tax purposes in the US, the same as selling any other cryptocurrency. The gain or loss is usually small precisely because the price barely moves — small is not the same as zero, and it is still reportable. Keep the transaction record and take the question to your accountant.
Which network should I send USDT on?
USDT is issued on several networks and they are not interchangeable — the address format, the fee and the confirmation time all change with the chain, and sending on the wrong one can put the funds beyond recovery. Match the network shown on the payout screen exactly. Polygon (ERC-20 on Polygon) is usually the cheapest route: Usually well under $0.01 per transfer in 2025–2026 — among the cheapest ways to move USDT or USDC
- Ethereum (ERC-20) — confirms in 30 seconds – 5 minutes. Tens of billions of USDT circulate on Ethereum in 2026 — the deepest stablecoin liquidity in DeFi
- TRON (TRC-20) — confirms in 1–3 minutes. TRON carries one of the two largest USDT supplies of any network — for years the most-used stablecoin rail in the world
- Polygon (ERC-20 on Polygon) — confirms in under 5 minutes. Widely supported on exchanges as the low-fee USDT withdrawal option
- BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20) — confirms in under 2 minutes. The default cheap USDT rail for users in the Binance ecosystem
- Avalanche (ERC-20 on C-Chain) — confirms in under 2 minutes. Natively issued by Tether on Avalanche
- TON (Jetton) — confirms in under 1 minute. Tether launched native USDT on TON in April 2024; Telegram Wallet distribution took its supply into the billions
What does it cost to send USDT?
The fee is charged by the network, not by us, and it is paid in that network's own coin — so you need a little of it sitting in the same wallet. On Ethereum you pay in ETH: Usually under $1 for an ETH transfer and $0.50–$3 for an ERC-20 token transfer in 2025–2026, after the 2024 Dencun upgrade pushed activity to cheaper L2s; demand spikes still multiply that. On TRON you pay in TRX: A TRC-20 USDT transfer burns roughly $1–4 of TRX at 2025–2026 rates unless the sender stakes TRX for energy, which can cut the cost to near zero; plain TRX transfers are fractions of a cent. On Polygon you pay in POL: Usually well under $0.01 per transfer in 2025–2026 — among the cheapest ways to move USDT or USDC. See /fees-and-limits for what Anytime Capital charges.
