Is CoinFlip legit? What that does and does not mean
CoinFlip is a real bitcoin ATM operator that has operated since 2015. The useful question is not whether it is a scam but what happens on the day something goes wrong, and that is where a kiosk in a store and a U.S. company with a front door part ways.
- Registered with FinCEN as a money services business (31000291840717) and with NMLS (1975146), holding money transmitter licences where a state requires one; it faces pending actions from the Iowa and Missouri attorneys general and Washington's Department of Financial Institutions.

Quick answer
Is CoinFlip legit and safe to use?
Yes, CoinFlip is a real company: founded in Chicago in 2015, registered with FinCEN and NMLS, with thousands of kiosks and a 24/7 phone line. It is also the subject of pending actions by the Iowa and Missouri attorneys general and Washington's financial regulator, which allege its kiosks were used to move scam victims' money. Legit is not the same as cheap or risk-free; the bigger risk at any bitcoin ATM is being talked into using one by a scammer.

Published or posted fee percentages on a cash purchase
- Anytime Capital
- CoinFlip
CoinFlip: a markup over the market price built into the kiosk's rate, listed in its U.S. terms at 21.9% on purchases (4.99% when you sell), varying by machine, plus a minimum network fee of a few dollars (21.9%). Anytime Capital: from 4%, shown in full before you confirm. Both exclude blockchain network fees. Published schedules as of October 2026; confirm your exact quote in each checkout.
The checklist: does CoinFlip pass?
CoinFlip passes the basic checks for a legitimate operator. It has traded since 2015, is registered with FinCEN as a money services business and with NMLS, holds money transmitter licences where states require them, publishes its fees in its terms of service, and answers the phone around the clock. Coins go to a wallet you control rather than sitting in a CoinFlip account.
It is also under sustained regulatory pressure, which belongs in any honest answer. The Iowa Attorney General sued in February 2025 alleging kiosks were used to move more than $13 million in scam payments. The Texas Department of Banking entered a consent order in March 2026. The Missouri Attorney General sued in May 2026, alleging fees up to 21.9% and losses over $7 million in that state, and CoinFlip has called the suit meritless. In September 2026 Washington's Department of Financial Institutions issued a statement of charges seeking to revoke its licence. These are allegations and pending proceedings, not findings.
The real safety rule for every bitcoin ATM is the same: no legitimate bank, government agency, utility or tech support desk will ever ask you to pay with a bitcoin machine. The FBI counted roughly $389 million in reported losses through crypto kiosks in 2025.
- Operating since 2015, headquartered in Chicago
- FinCEN MSB and NMLS registered, licensed where required
- 24/7 phone support
- Pending actions in Iowa, Missouri and Washington
What "safe" looks like when a trade goes sideways
Read the one-star reviews of CoinFlip and a pattern appears: accounts closed without a clear explanation, transactions stuck or slow to arrive, a kiosk markup far above what buyers expected, id tiers and daily limits that stop a purchase partway. These are compliance and process events, not theft, and every regulated platform has them. The difference is what you can do about it. On CoinFlip you call its support line and work it out over the phone, away from the machine. At Anytime Capital you call (470) 748-2530 and speak to someone who can see the order, or walk into the Atlanta branch at 2549 Piedmont Road NE, Suite 110, Atlanta, GA 30324 and resolve it across a desk.

How to protect yourself on any platform
Use the real website address and never a link from a message. Turn on two-factor authentication. Send your first purchase to a wallet you already control and confirm it arrives before buying more. Keep a screenshot of the confirmation screen with the fees. And if anyone contacts you claiming to be from any exchange and asks you to move money, hang up and call the number on the company's own site.
Leaving CoinFlip? Your wallet address works here too.
